Understanding Groundwater and Its Impact on Your Basement
Groundwater is the water beneath the earth’s surface, saturating the soil and rocks. The level of groundwater can fluctuate due to rainfall, soil type, and seasonal changes. When groundwater pressure builds up against your foundation, it can cause severe damage. In vulnerable areas like basements, water can seep through cracks in your slab, walls, or joints, leading to flooding, mold growth, and structural issues.

Why You Need a Basement Drainage System/French Drain
While you can’t stop groundwater from collecting near your foundation, you can take control of how it’s managed. One of the most effective solutions is installing a Basement Perimeter Drainage System, also known as a French Drain. This system is designed to redirect water away from your foundation before it has a chance to cause damage. For homeowners looking to protect their investment, this type of waterproofing system offers several key benefits, including:
Relieving Water Pressure
Think of a Basement Perimeter Drainage System/French Drain like a pressure release valve for your home. Groundwater naturally follows the path of least resistance—but when it’s trapped beneath your concrete slab with nowhere to go, pressure builds. Eventually, that water forces its way through porous concrete, cracks in your slab, or the joints near your foundation walls, leading to moisture problems and potential structural damage. However, when you install a 4-inch perforated pipe within a trench filled with crushed stone, the water finally has a path of escape. This system gives groundwater a controlled route to flow away from your slab—reducing pressure, preventing damage, and keeping your basement dry.
Managing Water Flow
A sump pump plays a critical role. When paired with a Basement Perimeter Drainage System also know as a French Drain, it helps manage water before it ever reaches your living space. Here’s how it works: water is collected through the drainage system and directed into a sump pit. From there, the sump pump activates, pushing the water out through a discharge line that safely moves it away from your home’s foundation. This proactive system not only helps prevent basement flooding, but also protects your property from long-term water damage.

Pipe & Stone
- Acts as a filtration system to prevent large sediment or debris from getting into the drain and clogging it.
- Allows the area around the drainage system/French Drain to act as a catch basin, greatly increasing the capacity of your interior drain system.
- Keeps moist subgrade material from encountering your porous concrete, preventing wicking.
Basement Drainage System/French Drain Installation Process:
Step 1:
Break the concrete around the perimeter of your basement, then dig down and excavate and dispose of the material. We’ll need about 5 feet of clearance around the perimeter of your basement.
Step 2:
We’ll lay a bed of ¾ inch crushed stone in the trench.
Step 3:
Install a 4-inch perforated drainpipe wrapped with filter fabric.
Step 4:
Then add in the rest of the ¾ inch crushed stone and recement all work.
Step 5:
Give the cement 72 hours to cure and you can move your belongings back to their original locations.
